How Did I Get Here w/Johnny Goudie

This week marks the culmination of a year's worth of excitement and opportunity for Dan as a member of the 2015 Black Fret Nominee class.  The Black Fret  "is a public charity that is built upon the simple principle that our local music, like the symphony and the opera, is worthy of the community’s support."  These rad people support Austin based musicians through grants that last year alone totaled $130,000.

Dan has been honored to participate in the nominee class this year and has been lifted up through the support of community and creative encouragement.  Dan will perform this Friday, December 4th at the Black Fret Ball at The Paramount Theatre.  In anticipation of the event and in reflection of how he got from there to here, Dan sat down with Johnny Goudie (twice) as a guest on his podcast "How Did I Get Here?"  Enjoy the listen and congrats to the entire Black Fret Nominee Class.

Dan LIVE in KUTX Studio 1A

Dan popped in Studio 1A this week to chat with Jay Trachtenberg about recording the Singing River Sessions in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, being a "blue collar" musician and juggling projects.  He hits Uncle Billy's this Sunday with his full band....a motley crew of musicians based in Dallas....they are set to play the KUTX Live series before heading down to New Orleans for the Voodoo Experience on Oct 30th.  Come check out the full band sound and send them on their way.

In the meantime, enjoy the can check out the 3 songs he played in the KUTX studio this week by linking to his music page here.  Peace.

Singing River Sessions EP is now available!!

In 2013, Dan traveled to Florence Alabama with his baseball team, The Texas Playboys, to barnstorm The Alabama Slammers (a team created by designers Natalie Chanin and Billy Reid).  While on the field, he met Will Trapp, a dude who along with John Paul White (of the Civil Wars) and Ben Tanner (of the Alabama Shakes) had newly formed a record label called Single Lock Records - based in Florence, of four cities that makes up the Shoals (as in Muscle Shoals...of recording history).  The two hit it off and made plans to record some music on Dan's next trip back to Bama.

A few months later, Will and Dan held true to their word and Dan made the drive back to spend time in the studio with Single Lock.  The Singing River Sessions were recorded over 2 days at The Nutthouse in Sheffield, Alabama with a motley group of musicians from the area who happened to be in town at the right time for Dan (including Bryan Farris, Zac Cockrell and Chad Gamble).  That's part of the beauty of music in The never know who might be in town, available and psyched to spend time in the studio...the guys at Single Lock are keeping that culture alive and you can hear it's benefit on Dan's Singing River Sessions.

This is the first formal offering of new music from Dan in several years (hmmmm...7 to be exact) and he's proud to be sending this out into the universe under the Single Lock umbrella.  It's also what we hope to be the tip of the iceberg in new music headed your way (another recording is well on its way to coming out early next year)...but for now enjoy The Singing River Sessions.  The physical album can be purchased at Dan's store online or any of his shows...and the digital download is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon....

Music Writing and Cowboy Living with Dan Dyer

For the past few years, Dan has enjoyed working with his friend and Texas Playboys teammate, Jack Sanders at Design Build Adventure.  The two have adventured together in Marfa, Texas, at El Cosmico and Seale, Alabama at Butch Anthony's DooNanny.... in Florence, Alabama BARNSTORMING Billy Reid and right here in Austin at projects all around town.

Dan is proud to host his own camp at Design Build Adventure on Saturday, October 3rd as part of the Artist in Residency program designed to expose folks to creative community and inspiration in different practices.  Dan has chosen to explore his own songwriting techniques and practices with campers embedded in the developed habit of seeking inspiration in varied outlets.

Campers will be exposed to the methods he follows in his own craft and will spend the day discussing and working together.  The day will include solo and group writing exercises, meditation, inspiration-seeking and a little bit of whiskey and brisket.  It promises to be a day of exploration, creation and community.
